INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2010
THEME: EQUAL RIGHT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: PROGRESS FOR ALL
Communiqué of the Okpuitumo women’s group drawn on the International Women’s Day 2010.
At the end of its one-day celebration of the International women’s Day which was marked with community Reflective Roundtable held at Ndiebor primary school Okpuitumo on the 8th of March 2010 for community women and other right based civil society organization/NGOs drawn from various parts of Ebonyi state of Nigeria, with the objectives of using appropriate social mobilization activities involving women groups across the communities to lend voice to women right violations.
The Community Reflective Roundtable (CRRT) aimed at sensitization and information toolkit for the community woman on the issues of rights violation and to bring home the message of equal rights and opportunity.
The program aimed at:
1. Community driven identification of women’s rights that are violated.
2. Community Reflective Round Table discussion on state laws and policies in relation to the identified violated women’s rights at the community level.
3. Development of communiqué on the promotion of laws and policies in favour of women’s rights
4. Reduce the socio-economic burden and impact of poverty on the women.
The expected Results/ Outputs include:
1. Increased awareness and familiarity with women’s right issues,
2. Awakening consciousness of policy makers on the challenges and gaps in policy implementation and promotion of equal rights
3. Greater resolve of community and religious leaders to be involved in activities aimed at reducing violation of women’s right.
The activities carried out include:
A. Social Mobilization of community women,
B. Awareness raising through presentation by Stampede Africa, Nigeria Medical association, Human right and conflict resolution group, Unicef Desk officer Ministry of Education.
D. Community dialogue with representative of women groups.
The participants unanimously agreed as follows:
1. That women should be given equal right to own property including land.
2. That policies and laws against female genital mutilation should be enforced by government
3. Participants encouraged women to report cases of battering /and violence to relevant agencies
4. That to reduce maternal mortality, government should equip and staff health centers built by the community women and other Non Governmental organizations in their communities.
5. That government should implement all laws against early marriage and or forceful marriage.
In conclusion:
(a) The community women acknowledged the commendable efforts of Actionaid and Partnership against Poverty in ensuring effective working relationship with women, particularly by impacting them with more knowledge on their rights. The women agreed to do their part expertly so as to report violations immediately they occur. The participants thus called on, and craved the indulgence of all to work together by emulating the teaching of the day.
(b) It is the firm belief of the participants that if government does its part, EQUAL RIGHT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: PROGRESS FOR ALL will be achieved.
